Welcome to Mrs. Perry's Web Page!

WE MADE IT TO 100 DAYS!!  Please continue to look at your child's planner DAILY.  There will be homework entries, notes from teachers, and any demerits that have been given. There are a lot pf projects at this time of year- sit down with your child and make a plan on the calendar for how much should be done each week until the due date. Overall, we need students to be studying things a little each night- and we expect them to practice some of the times tables EVERY EVENING!  Please check out the internet links at the top left of this page- there is a nice multiplication facts drill site!  The IXL site that we are using in math class is a GREAT practice tool.  If you notice your child struggling with a skill, try moving back a grade level on the website and finding the same skill at an easier level for further practice. Math facts are going to be vital to sucess in fifth grade and beyond. EVERYTHING we do using decimals and whole numbers this year hinges on those facts!!!

 INTRODUCTION:
To those of you who are wondering who Mrs. Perry is: I am a fourth and fifth grade special education teacher at Goodview Elementary School.  I have lived in Bedford for my entire life- except college.  I went through a four year college course and received a bachelor's education degree just like regular education teachers, and I am highly qualified in Reading/Language Arts and Math content areas (which means I can teach these classes to all learners). I teach, co-teach and include with the fifth grade team in all of subject areas. That means I am present in the regular classrooms!  I work with all learners and can be a great resource for parents as well.   Currently, I co-teach in Math and Reading on a regular basis.  I include in and modify assignments for the teachers in the Science and History classes as well.  This will be my ninth year teaching at Goodview Elementary School!

SCHEDULE:
My schedule is slightly different from a regular classroom teacher, mainly because I travel with one or two groups of kids and also need to have time allotted to test and handle documentation. My schedule is as follows:

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
If at any time a parent would like to donate items, please consider the special education teachers.  We have no homeroom kids to bring in things at the beginning of the year. And we often buy extra supplies to assist any students who or economically or organizationally challenged (whether they are in Sped. or not).  At this time I am in need of:  clorox wipes, hand soap and tissues.

SCHOOL SUCCESS STRATEGIES:
Many parents, teachers and students ask for input about how to help their kids succeed in school.  I have a short list of things that can help any kind of learner show their best!

1) START OUT RIGHT!  At the beginning of each school year (preferably) sit down with your learner and set up a clear system of organization.  Many parents are afraid to do this because they aren't sure what the teacher wants.  But the main thing to remember is: turn in, toss, or save. These are the ONLY 3 options for the papers that every kid acquires!  If you have a specified place to save things from each subject and a weekly clean out time set aside, you will be well on your way!

2) COMMUNICATION! Pay attention to what is coming home- now that the system (see #1) is functional, there should be a place for things that need to come home.  Each night check this folder and the planner for items written or stapled in. If you have internet access, read the weekly newsletter and check out the web pages like these!  We DO update them at least weekly, and there is a wealth of information and fun websites for your learner.

3) PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY: Decide together how much responsibility your learner should be accountable for own his/her own.  Parents want to raise kids who are responsible, but kids don't always learn this automatically.  They need to be taught reponsibilty directly.  Sit down and make a little list of what you as the parent are going to be responsible for that will help your learner and what they are responsible for as the kid. Just like chores at home.  For example:  "I (mom) will check your planner each night and ask about the homework there." And,  "I (student) will have my planner and bring my homework home!"  Ten and eleven year olds are really just beginning to be mature about wise choices and they need the grown-ups to model for them.

4) GETTING PRIORITIES STRAIGHT: Not only do most kids not understand how to make a system, many of them also struggle with the competing desires to have the coolest stuff or the most stuff. These kids bring the supply list items that are requested by teachers, and then carry all of these supplies to every class.  Help your learner understand that these supplies are important to have, but that they may only carry what is necessary. Communicate with the teachers about what is expected for each class on a regular day.  Make a list on that schedule that comes home.  Maybe even let your child draw illustrations to help them remember what they NEED.  Teach them the truth that "bigger isn't always better."

Please feel free to email me about other things you or youe child can do to get organized!  My email is:
